Nestled in the Eel River Valley, surrounded by the lush, redwood-covered ridges of Northern California’s Coast Ranges, is Stafford RV Park. You will find it located just off Hwy 101 in Scotia, California. It is definitely one of those rare finds.

Excellent Location for Touring
Stafford RV Park, also known as Avenue of the Giants Redwood Family Camp, is situated near several awe-inspiring forests and scenic destinations: the Avenue of the Giants, a breathtaking 31-mile drive through a redwood forest filled with memorable stops and trails; Humboldt Redwoods State Park, home to some of the tallest trees in the world; the Lost Coast, known for its dramatic cliffs and powerful ocean waves; and Fortuna, a quaint historic Victorian village that is fun to explore.

At first, it was the location that drove us to Stafford RV Park. We were eager to experience the Avenue of the Giants and other scenic attractions. We had read that it would be a wonderful place to ride our motorcycles through the towering trees, and we were especially interested in visiting the nearby beach.

Hospitality at its Best
However, immediately upon our arrival, something else captured our attention—it was the people. We were greeted by every staff member as if we had been dropped into the middle of a very special family reunion. They seem to live by the motto, “We are all family—no strangers here.” Everyone was friendly, welcoming us with smiles and a genuine desire to make sure we were comfortably settled. It truly felt like a home away from home.

Cindy and Debbie, with gracious hospitality shining through, personally escorted us to our campsite. While we were still setting up, Debbie returned with a lawnmower to trim the grass around our site—she wanted everything to be just right. Neither she nor Cindy ever seemed rushed; instead, they were eager to visit and answer our questions. Each time they passed by in their golf cart, they waved and offered a kind word. They were never too busy to stop if we needed anything.

Not Just a Camp, It’s a Ministry
I knew instantly this was a different kind of place as I began to meet these dedicated workers. That impression deepened when I noticed the names of the cabins on the map—Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Faith, Hope, Charity, and Grace. There were also two group areas, each with a cross on top of the buildings. “Hmm…this feels a lot like a church camp,” I thought.

Then we met the camp manager, Billie Jean. Billie Jean knew her people well and was a great encourager to them. She has a vision for this camp—improvements she hopes to make and goals to achieve—all in the name of sharing Christ with others. As we spoke with the staff, her name came up again and again. The volunteers clearly loved and respected her because she supports, sacrifices, and genuinely cares for them. Yet, despite her leadership, we found Billie Jean to be a humble servant. That, perhaps, is why she is so deeply loved.

Many Dedicated Volunteers
Over the four days we stayed at Stafford RV Park, we learned that this campground operates as a ministry connected to Redwood Christian Center in nearby Eureka. The park is run by volunteers who live on-site, each with a unique story that brought them there. Some had experienced homelessness, others difficult family situations, but all shared one thing in common—a life changed through a relationship with Jesus Christ. Now, as they serve at the camp, they truly embody the hands and feet of Jesus.

A Ministry That Touches Many
In addition to welcoming travelers, Avenue of the Giants Redwood Family Camp hosts a variety of Christian-centered retreats throughout the year, including family, youth, children’s, and women’s camps. The campground also provides a place for pastors and missionaries to come and rest. They minister to those who are hurting, including individuals facing abuse, homelessness, and other life challenges.

Jesus Rocks the Redwoods
Each summer, Stafford RV Park comes alive with “Jesus Rocks the Redwoods,” a vibrant Christian music festival that draws families and believers from across the region. Set among the towering redwoods, this all-day event features live worship music from both local and nationally known artists, along with food vendors, ministries, and activities for all ages. What began in 2010 has grown into one of the North Coast’s premier Christian gatherings—an uplifting day of music, fellowship, and faith in one of the most beautiful settings imaginable.

Stafford RV Park: Nonprofit for Jesus
Stafford RV Park operates as a nonprofit and depends on donations to continue its mission. All of the work is carried out by volunteers, and these faithful workers are constantly improving the facilities. When a project arises, you will often see a group joyfully working side by side.
While it may not offer luxury accommodations, the bathroom facilities are clean and well-maintained. Recently, a new roof was added to the office building, and future plans include upgrading campsites to provide sewer hookups instead of relying solely on a dump station. They also have plans to build a much-needed worship center.

Drop by for a Blessing
Yes, the location of Stafford RV Park initially drew us in—but what truly made this place unforgettable was the fellowship we experienced. If your travels bring you this way, consider stopping by. You may just find yourself feeling like part of the family.

How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, “Your God reigns!” Isaiah 52:7
Everywhere I go, I enjoy camping with Jesus—on the road and in life.
Enjoy your journey, and feel free to reach out.
